Reading the Bible
Opening the reader
Clicking the Scriptorium icon opens the reading page in a new tab. When you come back, you find the last chapter you read.
Moving through the Bible
- Book menu: three levels, Testament › group › book. On a small screen it becomes a drawer that you open with the menu button.
- One chapter at a time: pick it from the grid of the book’s chapter numbers, or move to the neighbouring one with the “Previous chapter” and “Next chapter” buttons.
- From the keyboard: the ← and → arrow keys open the previous and the next chapter (except while typing text or when a window is open).
Books carry the name the chosen Bible gives them; in the original text, they carry their Hebrew or Greek name.
Choosing your Bible
The “Bible version” selector in the top bar offers four texts:
- Louis Segond 1910 (French);
- American Standard Version 1901 (English);
- Reina-Valera 1909 (Spanish);
- the original text: Hebrew for the Old Testament, Greek for the New.
Until you choose one, Scriptorium uses the Bible for your browser’s language: French → Louis Segond, Spanish → Reina-Valera, any other language → American Standard Version. Your choice is then remembered. When you change Bible, the same book and chapter are shown in the new one (or the nearest chapter that exists).
Verse numbers are those of the Bible on display: they can differ from one Bible to another, notably in the Psalms, whose title is counted as a verse or not.
The 2nd Bible: interlinear reading
The + button (“Add a 2nd Bible”) in the top bar shows under each verse the matching verse of a second Bible. By default this is the original text (unless it is already your 1st Bible): Hebrew, written right to left, or Greek. A second selector lets you pick another Bible, and the × button (“Close the 2nd Bible”) closes the interlinear reading.
- The matching follows the reference numbering, not the displayed number: where two Bibles do not number their verses the same way, each verse of the 2nd Bible stays under the verse it answers.
- The 2nd Bible list never contains the 1st. If you choose, as 1st Bible, the one that is in 2nd position, the two swap places.
- If the 2nd Bible’s file cannot be read, a message says so and the 1st Bible is shown alone.
Notes, comments and quotations also work in interlinear reading: see notes and comments.
