Scriptorium

The Bible one click away, even without a connection.

Settings and offline page

The offline page

When a page cannot load because of an internet access problem, Scriptorium replaces the browser’s error page with a page that invites you to read the Bible. It only appears for a tab’s main page (the http or https address of a public site), and only if the failure comes from a network that is down, a site name that cannot be found, a timeout or a failing proxy.

The page shows the probable cause, the browser’s error code and the name of the requested site (the name only, never the path of the address), then offers:

  • “Read the Bible”: opens the reader in a new tab;
  • “Try again”: checks the connection by sending a request to the requested page, then reopens it if it answers. Otherwise, “Still no connection.” is shown. The same check starts by itself when the browser reports that the network is back while the offline page is displayed;
  • “Go back to the previous page”: shown only if there was a page before the one that failed.

What the offline page never intercepts

The browser keeps its own message for local sites (localhost, private networks, host names without a dot), certificate and security errors, refused connections, cancelled loads and anything that is not a tab’s main page.

Good to know: from the offline page, the browser’s Back button shows the original error page once before going back to the previous page.

Settings

The ⚙ Settings button, in the top bar of the reading page, opens the settings panel. Every change is saved straight away.

  • Appearance › Theme: System (your device’s), Light or Dark.
  • Bible text formatting: alignment (Left, or Justified by default), font (Arial, Times New Roman, Georgia, Verdana, Baskerville, Roboto by default, Open Sans) and font size (Small, Medium by default, Large). Only the verses change appearance, not the menus or buttons.
  • Offline page: the “Invite me to read the Bible when the connection fails” box is ticked by default. Untick it to get the browser’s usual error page back.
  • Reset settings to defaults: brings the Bible (automatic choice), the 2nd Bible (closed), the formatting, the offline page and the theme back to their original values. Your notes and comments are not touched.
  • Credits and licenses (collapsible block, at the bottom of the panel): one card per Bible (full name, author, publisher, year, language, type, text license) and the license of the data files, with their rights holder. See also the privacy page.

Roboto and Open Sans are not shipped with the extension: a font is only used if it is installed on your device, otherwise the browser picks another. The same goes for Baskerville, which is missing from many Windows computers.

What is synced

The chosen Bible, the 2nd Bible, the offline page and the formatting are saved in the extension’s storage: if you have turned on your browser’s sync, it is your browser that syncs them across your devices, since the extension has no server. The theme, the reading position and your notes stay specific to each device.
