Notes and comments

Selecting verses

Notes, comments and copying all start from a selection of verses:

  • Click on a verse: it becomes the only selection;
  • Ctrl + click (Cmd on Mac): adds or removes a verse;
  • Shift + click: selects every verse from the last verse you clicked;
  • Drag with the mouse or a stylus: selects the verses you touch;
  • Touchscreen: tapping a verse selects or deselects it.

An action bar appears with three buttons: 🔥, 💬 and 📋. To deselect everything, click outside the verses or press Esc; changing chapter or Bible also deselects. For now, selecting is done with the mouse or a finger, not from the keyboard.

🔥 The Holy Spirit is speaking to me

The 🔥 button marks the selected verses as the ones the Holy Spirit is speaking to you about. A 🔥 marker then appears before the verse. Clicking this marker opens a window that tells you when you set it, and from which you can delete it.

💬 Comments

The 💬 button opens an input window: write your comment (up to 5,000 characters), then save. A 💬 marker appears before the verse. Clicking it lets you reread the comment, with its creation and last modification dates; you can edit or delete it. Closing the window without saving loses the text you typed.

If your selection contains several separate runs of verses, one note is saved for each run. For a comment, the same text is then saved for each of them, and each note afterwards becomes independent of the others.

📋 Copying a quotation

The 📋 button puts the quotation of the selected verses on the clipboard: their text, the book, the chapter, the verses and the Bible, for example:

"Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin, Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher." Exodus 1:3-4 (ASV)

A selection in several parts gives one quotation per part, one per line. In interlinear reading, the quotation includes, for each verse, the matching line of the 2nd Bible, with its own book and its own numbers. Scriptorium writes to the clipboard when you click, but never reads it.

Limits

  • At most 7 🔥 notes and 3 💬 comments per verse;
  • a comment is 5,000 characters long at most.

When a verse’s limit is reached, a window tells you so and invites you to delete older notes by clicking their marker; nothing is saved.

Your notes stay on your device

Notes and comments are saved only in the extension’s local storage, on your device. They are neither synced nor transmitted, and Scriptorium offers no backup or export. Uninstalling the extension deletes them, with no way to get them back.

A note follows the verse from one Bible to another, even where their numbering differs. If a Bible does not have that verse, the note is kept but shows no marker.
