Search
Opening the search
Two paths lead to the “Search” page:
- the “Search” entry, at the very top of the menu, before the Old Testament;
- the 🔍 button in the top bar, to the left of ⚙. From the search, this button takes you back to the chapter you were reading, just as ⚙ does from the Settings. On a very narrow screen (under 400 px) it is hidden: the menu entry is enough.
The search covers the verses of the chosen Bible in the “Bible version” selector of the top bar, one at a time. Changing Bible, or scope, runs the current search again.
Searching
Type one or more words in the “Word(s) to find” field, then press Enter or use the “Search” button.
- Several words: the verse must contain all of them.
- In quotation marks: the exact phrase is searched, for example “Jehovah God”. A word joined by an apostrophe or a hyphen is also treated as a phrase.
- At least three characters: below that, nothing is searched and the page tells you so.
The search ignores case, accents (and Hebrew vowels and Greek accents), straight or curly apostrophes, and “œ”. It finds a word even inside another: “faith” also finds “faithful”. It does not look for roots: “love” does not find “loving”.
Narrowing the scope
Three optional drop-down lists under the field limit the search. By default it is “Whole Bible”.
- Testament: the Old or the New;
- Group: a group of books, offered once a testament is chosen;
- Book: one book, offered once a group is chosen.
Book names are those of the chosen Bible. Changing a choice empties the ones that depend on it.
The results
The page first states the number of verses found (for example “33 verses found”), then shows them ten per page, in Bible order (no ranking by relevance). Each card gives:
- the reference (for example “John 3:16”), with the book name and numbering of the chosen Bible;
- the text of the verse, where the words found are highlighted;
- on the right, a button (the extension’s icon) that opens the chapter. It leads to the chapter, not to the verse itself.
The “Previous page” and “Next page” buttons under the list move through the results. The first search in a Bible briefly shows “Preparing the search…”; later ones are instant.
What is never saved
What you search for is not saved, not put in the page address and not transmitted: the search runs in memory, in the Bibles shipped with the extension, with no network access at all. The browser’s Back button, from a chapter opened from a result, brings back the search as you left it (text, scope and page); each new opening of the extension starts from an empty page.
Limits
- One Bible at a time (the 1st); the 2nd Bible is hidden on this page.
- The search does not cover your comments.
- No search history, no export, no direct opening at the verse.
- Highlights are not shown in the results.
